The AAA Latin American Championship has been officially vacated after the titleholder suffered a significant injury requiring surgery.
About two weeks ago on NXT, AAA Latin American Champion El Hijo Del Vikingo was scheduled to defend his title against EK Prosper. However, Vikingo sustained an injury during preparations for the match and was forced to withdraw. Prosper faced Keanu Carver in a rematch from the previous week instead.
Vikingo underwent successful surgery for his injury and was absent from this week’s show. In his place, fellow El Ojo clan members Dorian Roldan and Omos competed, with Roldan holding Vikingo’s championship belt.
Roldan announced that Vikingo will be sidelined for “many, many weeks” and placed blame on WWE Hall of Famer and AAA General Manager Rey Mysterio, accusing him of negligence for sending Vikingo to perform on SmackDown and NXT. Roldan indicated he intends to pursue legal action against Mysterio.
Subsequently, Roldan declared that due to Vikingo’s injury, the Latin American Championship would be transferred to Omos within the El Ojo stable.
However, AAA GM Rey Mysterio intervened, entering the ring alongside Roldan and Omos to address the situation. Mysterio clarified that the title cannot be transferred in this manner and requested that Omos return the championship belt, warning of indefinite suspension otherwise.
Omos complied, returning the belt to Mysterio, who officially declared the championship vacant. Mysterio announced that next week he will reveal the process for determining the new champion.
The upcoming WWE AAA Verano De Escandalo event on July 25 has been suggested as an ideal venue to crown a successor.
Former WWE World Heavyweight Champion Damian Priest recently delivered a video message expressing his interest in competing for the vacant Latin American Championship title.
