U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham, a prominent ally of former President Donald Trump, died of a sudden illness, hisilla office confirmed on Sunday morning. He was 71.
Graham’s passing is set to reverberate throughout Washington and the Republican Party. He has represented South Carolina in the Senate since 2003.
“On the evening of Saturday, July 11, U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham passed away after a brief and sudden illness,” his office said in a statement. “The Senator’s family appreciates prayers at this time and asks for privacy during this incredibly difficult period.”
A retired Air Force Reserve colonel and former military lawyer, Graham was known as a hawk, supporting the Iraq war and consistently advocating for decisive action against Iran. He had been one of Trump’s most vocal defenders amid the current conflict.
He ran for president in 2016, initially a sharp critic of Trump, but later emerged as one of the former president’s most steadfast supporters on Capitol Hill.
