Charlotte met the director before reading the script and later learned about a scene in which the antagonist Rabban the Beast orders his Algerian forces to strip in front of the Atreides palace. She was informed that the sequence would involve 2,000 extras performing the act simultaneously, leading her to decline participation.
“It would be unacceptable for 2,000 extras to defecate on screen,” Pavich said. “Charlotte Rampling agreed to meet with Jodorowsky, read the script, and replied that she could not appear in a film featuring such a scene. She insisted on being part of a project that would attract audiences.”
Although the incident has not been publicly discussed by Charlotte, she previously told IndieWire that she admired the novel and its protagonist Jessica, noting that Jodorowsky’s earlier adaptation was not realized and that she was absent from the subsequent David Lynch version.
