A prominent AEW wrestler might be stepping back from TV for a while.
MJF surrendered the AEW World Championship to Kenny Omega on the Beach Break episode of AEW Dynamite last week, concluding his third title reign. The bout was initially slated for the AEW Redemption pay-per-view but was shifted to television, raising questions about MJF’s role at Redemption.
Fightful Select suggests that MJF might simply take time off. When queried about his plans for the pay‑per‑view, sources indicated he could be absent from television for an unspecified stretch.
Fightful emphasized that these reports are not confirmed, merely indicative, and that no specific duration for any potential hiatus has been given. Nevertheless, the sources still expect MJF to appear at AEW All In in some capacity, even if the exact nature of his involvement remains uncertain.
On July 8 in Clearwater, Florida, MJF lost the title at Beach Break under a stipulation that barred Omega from future title challenges should he fall. Omega endured a low blow and a belt shot, while Will Ospreay interfered by removing MJF’s Dynamite Diamond Ring before Omega secured victory with the One‑Winged Angel. The win gave Omega his second AEW World Championship; MJF had captured the belt by defeating Darby Allin at Double or Nothing in May.
Relocating the match to Dynamite sparked discussion. Dave Meltzer noted on Wrestling Observer Radio that the bout and its stipulation were originally earmarked for Redemption, and that MJF reportedly advocated moving it to television—a change Tony Khan sanctioned. Fightful Select also reported that AEW insiders believed MJF drove the switch, with the intention for Omega to capture the title having been set for months.
AEW Redemption is scheduled for July 26 at Montreal’s Bell Centre, with Thekla’s AEW Women’s World Championship defense against Willow Nightingale currently the only confirmed match. All In will follow on August 30 at London’s Wembley Stadium, where Omega is slated to defend the AEW World Championship against Will Ospreay.
