In a remarkable display of endurance, a group of African wild dogs undertook one of the longest recorded land journeys by any predator, traversing approximately 2,500 miles across southern and eastern Africa in search of new territory and mates.
African wild dogs are among the continent’s rarest predators, with estimates suggesting only around 6,000 remain in the wild. They live in tightly knit, highly social packs, cooperatively hunt their prey, and are renowned for their extensive roaming behaviour in pursuit of new territory and breeding opportunities with other packs.
Because they cannot breed within the pack into which they are born, young wild dogs must either wait to eventually inherit their n组 group or, typically at the age of two or three, strike out on their own in search of a mate.
The male siblings in this particular journey covered roughly 260 miles in a straight line over eight months, yet travelled nearly ten times that distance overall as they navigated a fragmented landscape of roads, settlements, and farmland.
This type of one-way movement is known as dispersal — a behaviour distinct from seasonal migration, in which animals travel back and forth between regions in pursuit of food or suitable habitat.
The UN Convention on Migratory Species recognises Africa’s longest migrations as those of wildebeest moving seasonally between Tanzania and Kenya in search of grazing and water, covering more than 400 miles. Globally, caribou undertake the longest single land migrations of any animal — travelling 839 miles in a round trip — while grey wolves have been recorded covering more than 4,350 miles over the course of a year.
Perhaps even more significant than the sheer distance was the route the wild dogs chose through Zambia. They moved between established wildlife strongholds, carefully skirting areas containing major human obstacles, including the capital city of Lusaka and heavily developed industrial zones.
The findings suggest that wild dog populations across eastern and southern Africa may be more interconnected than conservationists had previously believed.
Professor Scott Creel of Montana State University, the study’s lead author and a researcher who has studied African wild dogs since 1991, said the results offer cautious optimism. “It’s plausible to believe that every major wild dog population in eastern and southern Africa, other than fenced ones, are potentially connected,” he said. However, he added that in conservation, “the glass is half empty and the glass is half full,” pointing to the persistent threat of poaching snares.
While the three male wild dogs successfully completed their extraordinary journey, the story was tragically different for the females. Two of three sisters that set out on an equally epic trek perished, the remaining one having been trapped in a snare and forced to stop. Researchers identified a pattern in which surviving pack members repeatedly returned to the same location — a behaviour that often signals the death of a companion.
The research, published in the journal Ecology, adds weight to growing calls to establish corridors of natural habitat outside protected areas that link separate wildlife regions broken apart by roads, towns, and farms.
Bruce Ellender, one of the paper’s co-authors and Kafue Conservation director for the environmental charity The Nature Conservancy, said species that roam over vast areas, such as wild dogs and elephants, require connected landscapes if they are to survive into the future. “We can’t see these protected areas as islands and expect them to be functional in the long term — we need to think much broader than that,” he said.
