Africa’s International Scrutiny Intensifies Amid Protests
The UN is closely monitoring South Africa’s anti-immigration protests as discussions escalate across multiple cities.
Amid growing public action, spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric confirmed that the UN remains attentive to the unfolding events on the ground. The situation is being evaluated with a focus on maintaining peaceful outcomes.
Amnesty International has expressed concerns over alleged “citizen’s arrests” targeting undocumented migrants, warning against actions that could lead to violence or intimidation.
Executive director Shenilla Mohamed emphasized that while peaceful protest is vital, any measures must protect everyone involved, according to the report.
Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia urged officers to uphold neutrality and prevent vigilantism during the demonstrations. The government insists on a professional response to ensure safety and dignity for all.
