After gun found in lake, French police probe link to 2012 Iraqi family murder

The recent finding of a firearm in Lake Annecy in eastern France offers new leads toward solving the 2012 murder of an Iraqi-British family that has eluded investigators for nearly 15 years.

The case of the al-Hilli family has baffled law enforcement for years, with no perpetrator ever identified in the 2012 killings.

On August 20, British tourists discovered a Luger—an older German pistol—while swimming in Lake Annecy. French police are now examining the evidence, noting similarities to the weapon allegedly employed during the 2012 murders, according to Agence France‑Presse.

The deceased include Iraqi‑born British engineer Saad al‑Hilli, his wife Iqbal al‑Hilli, their mother Suhaila al‑Allaf, and French cyclist Sylvain Mollier, who was traveling on a nearby mountain road when the tragedy unfolded. All five victims were fatally struck in the head.
