Cristiano Ronaldo and head coach Ange Postecoglou came under scrutiny after Al-Nassr endured a punishing 4-0 defeat against Al-Ain in its AFC Champions League Elite opener. The result prompted an immediate review by the club’s hierarchy into the causes of the performance and the changes needed moving forward.
Al-Ain controlled the match from the start, with Houssine Rahimi scoring twice before goals from his brother, Soufiane Rahimi, and Georgios Giakoumakis completed the victory. For Ronaldo, now 41, it was his heaviest defeat since arriving in Saudi football in 2023 and his worst result since Manchester United lost 4-0 at Brentford in August 2022.
Despite travelling to the United Arab Emirates with a squad full of high-profile players, the Saudi Pro League champions failed to match the two-time Asian champions. Houssine Rahimi opened the scoring in the 25th minute, added a second shortly after halftime and Soufiane Rahimi extended the lead with 18 minutes remaining.
Giakoumakis settled the contest in the 85th minute, leaving Al-Nassr with a difficult start to its continental campaign. Ronaldo tried to influence the match with an overhead kick and a late free-kick, but Al-Ain goalkeeper Khalid Eisa comfortably handled his best attempt.
The Portuguese forward recorded five shots, although three were blocked, one missed the target and only one forced a save. Just three of his 29 touches came inside the penalty area, highlighting how effectively Al-Ain restricted his access to dangerous positions.
Postecoglou accepts responsibility
Postecoglou refused to blame his players after the defeat and instead accepted responsibility for the performance. “The players gave everything they had, and I do not place any responsibility on them… and the responsibility is my responsibility,” the Australian said after the final whistle.
He was equally blunt in his assessment of the team, adding: “Al-Nassr as a whole was poor.” The comments followed a difficult four-match run in which the club managed one win, one draw and two defeats.
Postecoglou also defended Ronaldo when asked about the forward’s influence. He highlighted Ronaldo’s three Saudi Pro League goals, the limited preparation available after the World Cup and the veteran’s continuing value as an example to his teammates.
Urgent review clarifies Postecoglou’s position
The defeat prompted Al-Nassr’s management to hold an urgent meeting with Postecoglou, according to 365Scores Arabic. The discussions reportedly focused on the tactical errors against Al-Ain, the team’s recent decline and the steps required to improve its performances.
The reports state, however, that Postecoglou has not requested to resign or end his contract. They also dismiss claims of a disagreement between the coach and the club’s executives over his future, making Al-Nassr’s immediate position clear.

The meeting therefore appears to have centered on solutions rather than a change of coach. Postecoglou joined Al-Nassr in July on a two-year contract, succeeding Jorge Jesus after the club secured its first Saudi Pro League title of the Ronaldo era.
