Alan Coleman to step down as Middlesex director of cricket

Alan Coleman will conclude his five-year tenure as Middlesex’s Director of Cricket at the close of the 2026 season.

He assumed the position in 2021, following Stuart Law’s departure as head coach, after earlier serving as assistant coach and academy director.

During his dual-capacity role spanning men’s and women’s senior squads, notable milestones included the men’s team achieving promotion to Division One of the County Championship in 2022, as well as the Sunrisers’ victory in the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy in 2024.

His departure follows confirmation that former chief executive Andrew Cornish was sacked in June—seven months after taking an unnecessary leave of absence under scrutiny from the Cricket Regulator concerning conduct issues.

“I’ve taken great comfort leading cricket at the club I grew up supporting,” Coleman remarked. “We can look back fondly on the remarkable progress made throughout this adversity.”

“It has been a privilege working alongside exceptional athletes and staff – specifically the coaching teams of Richard Johnson, Dane Vilas, Peter Fulton for the men, and Andy Tennant, Marc Broom for the women, plus Danni Warren as Sunrisers’ regional Director of Cricket – during this period.”

Interim CEO Julie Harrington expressed appreciation, stating she wishes Alan well and highlighting his evident commitment that powered many successes.

“While my involvement with Middlesex is limited, the depth of dedication shown by Alan is profound, and the club’s accomplishments underscore his tireless effort.”

“I welcome the early notice and believe succession planning is already underway; his philosophy championing development of home‑grown players will guide future direction.”

Coleman will remain in his post through at least the end of the calendar year, overseeing the kickoff of the winter training programme and facilitating the transition period.
