Albanese to host three Pacific leaders in Brisbane

Anthony Albanese will hold bilateral meetings with the prime ministers of Papua New Guinea, Tonga, and Samoa in Brisbane, aiming to strengthen Australia’s regional influence amid growing concerns over China’s geopolitical activities.

The discussions will precede a joint appearance at a Pacific rugby league event alongside the three leaders, followed by attendance at the State of Origin decider at Suncorp Stadium.

This follows Albanese’s recent diplomatic tour of Fiji and the Solomon Islands, where he secured a major defense agreement under the Ocean of Peace Alliance, expanding Australia’s formal partnerships in the Pacific.

Henry Ivarature, of the Australian Pacific Security College, noted the shift toward sustained engagement, stating Australia has adopted a more patient approach to align with Pacific governance structures.

“Australia has learned to listen and accept the way Pacific governments operate,” Ivarature said, adding that maintaining trust long-term will be critical as regional strategies evolve amid China’s expanding presence.

The Brisbane talks are expected to prioritize enhanced military cooperation and aid programs, reflecting Australia’s strategic focus on countering China’s influence in the Pacific.
