Police clashed with demonstrators in Tirana on Tuesday as protests against a luxury coastal development associated with Jared Kushner, U.S. President Donald Trump’s son-in-law, reached their 100th day.
The crowds attempted to break through a police cordon near the capital’s center and march toward parliament. Officers blocked their route while protesters threw eggs and tomatoes at those wearing riot gear. Lawmakers were escorted to and from the parliament building as demonstrators chanted, “Arrest Rama!”
The nightly demonstrations began after Albania’s parliament returned from summer recess and initially opposed the extensive coastal project. They have since expanded into a major challenge for Prime Minister Edi Rama and his long-ruling Socialist Party.
Known as the “Flamingo Revolution” after protesters displayed signs featuring the pink bird threatened by the development, the movement argues that the project would damage the environment and restrict public access to Albania’s coastline.
Rama, who has been a primary target of the protests, strongly backs the investment. He has argued that the development could help modernize a country that remained isolated under decades of Communist rule.
Several protesters were detained during the demonstrations, although it was immediately unclear whether any formal arrests had been made.
