Philippine tennis star Alex Eala was left stunned after a 6-3, 6-0 defeat to the 102-ranked American in Hong Kong.

Alex Eala of the Philippines became emotional while reflecting on a life‑changing season after narrowly missing a second WTA Tour title in Hong Kong.

The second seed was defeated 6‑3, 6‑0 by Claire Liu in the Hong Kong Open final, with the American, ranked 102nd, claiming her inaugural WTA title on Sunday.

Eala currently holds a career‑high ranking of world No. 17 following a breakthrough season that saw the 21‑year‑old secure her first WTA title in Washington, D.C., in August.

Her triumph marked the first time a Filipino player captured a WTA Tour tournament title.

She is scheduled to move up to world No. 15 next week, having begun the year ranked 50th.

“This season has transformed my life for the better,” Eala said after the final, noting the heavy strapping on her right leg.

She became emotional while addressing her team in the stands, expressing pride in the work they had accomplished together.

“We are the only ones who truly understand what it took to reach this point in our journey,” she added.

“This is only the beginning,” she concluded.
