[Allica Bank Applies for Swedish Banking Licence as It Pursues Strategic International Expansion
Allica Bank has submitted an application for a Swedish banking licence, marking its first significant international expansion beyond the United Kingdom.
In preparing for this initiative, the company has incorporated a local legal entity within Sweden and convened a dedicated regional leadership team.
Rickard Westlund will serve as head of the Swedish division, supported by Javier Ubillos as chief technology officer, Victor Ramstrom as chief product and operating officer, and Samuel Tawadros as Chief Financial Officer.
The bank is actively recruiting skilled professionals for expanded roles focused on product development, technology infrastructure, and day‑to‑day operations.
This strategic move follows the completion of a £155 million Series D financing round earlier in February, which valued the lender at approximately £1.2 billion.
The recently raised capital is earmarked to fund the bank’s next developmental phase, particularly supporting its inaugural enterprise beyond the UK market.
Acquiring a Swedish licence would also position Allica to eventually offer services throughout other European Union nations.
Allica Bank CEO Richard Davies remarked, “Sweden stands out as one of Europe’s most digitally mature economies, backed by a respected regulatory framework—making it an ideal destination for Our first expansion beyond the UK. Our long‑standing success with established businesses provides the foundation for replicating this model in a new jurisdiction, contingent upon regulatory approval.”
“We could not undertake this transition without proof points from our UK operation. By delivering on commitments to proven corporate clients—offering a comprehensive product suite that blends leading‑edge technology with deep domain expertise—we are keen to bring that approach to Sweden, assuming finish‑line supervision commits to the application.”
Key considerations driving the Swedish selection include the robustness of the domestic lending landscape, the intensity of competition from entrenched institutions, the region’s dynamic digital environment, and the prestige of Sweden’s supervisory authority.
Regarding its history, Allica secured its UK banking licence in 2019 and has since extended credit to more than £4 billion, serving over 15,000 business clients through its core accounts solution.
The Swedish licensing application is presently under evaluation and pending final ratification by Finansinspektionen.
