Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso explains the reason behind Levi Colwill’s half‑time substitution at Sunderland.
The Blues suffered a 1‑0 defeat away to Sunderland earlier today, with Enzo Le Fee converting a penalty awarded for a foul by Colwill.
Colwill appeared to feel the decision was harsh and was substituted shortly afterwards. Alonso later clarified that the substitution was prompted by the player’s booking.
“There was a reason… he had a yellow card as well. We didn’t want to take any risks, and we had discussed this during the week,” Alonso said.
The loss drops Chelsea to fifth place in the Premier League standings, with 16 points – 11 behind leaders and current champions Arsenal.
Chelsea will face Leeds United at home in their next match, where goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, who missed the Sunderland game due to a jaw fracture, is expected to return.
