Google’s fast-growing advertising revenue
Alphabet’s advertising segment delivered strong growth in the second quarter. Search generated $63.27 billion, a 16.7% increase year‑over‑year. YouTube advertising contributed $11.05 billion, up 12.8% from the prior quarter. Google Network earned $7.3 billion, essentially flat compared with the previous year.
Altogether, Alphabet’s advertising revenue reached $81.63 billion in Q2, representing a 14% year‑over‑year increase.
Sundar Pichai, Alphabet’s CEO, said AI is driving higher Google Search usage.
“We continue to make Search more helpful and intuitive. We recently brought together AI Overviews and AI Mode into one seamless Search experience that combines our frontier capabilities with the best of the web. And we’re continuing to incorporate more frontier capabilities into Search with agents, personal intelligence and notebooks, with new experiences resonating with users and driving growth in queries.”
Advertising pays the bills
Strong user growth fuels Alphabet’s need to expand its AI‑focused cloud infrastructure. In Q2, the company recorded $44.9 billion in capital expenditures, producing a free cash flow deficit of $5.9 billion. Management says the spending is essential for building data centers, servers, and networking gear to meet cloud demand. Cloud revenue rose 82% to $24.8 billion, and the Google Cloud backlog grew to $514 billion, underscoring confidence in future returns.
Alphabet’s advertising business, bolstered by the 2.5 billion monthly users of AI Overview, provides a highly profitable core that can fund its extensive AI infrastructure investments. As AI drives additional search traffic, the company is positioned to convert its large AI spend into further revenue growth.
