Alycia “The Bomb” Baumgardner is seeking to become a two-division world champion today as she challenges the undefeated IBF lightweight world champion, the “Golden Turkish Warrior” Elif Nur Turhan.
The match could represent the toughest test of Baumgardner’s career, challenging both her chin and her technical boxing ability. Baumgardner faces a powerful puncher with six first-round knockouts and an overall knockout rate of 57.14 percent. In women’s boxing, a knockout ratio of 50 percent or higher is considered exceptional.
What makes Turhan so dangerous is her unconventional style, throwing punches from awkward angles under relentless pressure. In the IBF championship match against Beatriz Ferreira, she demonstrated power and tenacity by overpowering Ferreira, dropping her multiple times before earning a fifth-round technical knockout victory.
Ferreira mistakenly believed she could stay in the pocket and exchange with the Golden Turkish Warrior and paid the price. Since then, opponents have learned not to stand in front of Turhan (14-0, 8 KOs) and give her the opportunity to land clean punches. Her last two opponents, Taylah Gentzen and Gabriela Tellez, found success by being mobile and becoming moving targets. The lateral movement frustrated Elif as she struggled to cut the ring off and land cleanly, missing several shots badly from distance against both.
However, when they were in range, she found limited success connecting from awkward angles. Both of her fights against Gentzen and Tellez went the distance, and in the eyes of some, they were controversial decision victories.
Baumgardner (18-1, 7 KOs) likes to come forward and exchange with opponents and takes a lot of punishment as a result. She is vulnerable to counters, and against Turhan it may very well be her downfall. Defensively, she has been taking more and more damage with every fight. In her last three fights, her opponents’ total landed punches have gone up with per fight:
Jennifer Miranda outlanded Baumgardner in total punches, 79 to 78; Leilan Boudain was able to land 98 total punches against her; and Bo Mi Re Shin landed the most ever against Alycia at 151. Baumgardner is not known for her defensive prowess, but against Turhan she cannot be so careless.
It may pose difficulty for her to tighten up defensively when she is so offensively oriented. Baumgardner’s opponents do have success against her in landing their power shots, doing so at a high rate of 27.3 percent. If Turhan is given the opportunity to land the same rate of power shots, she will win the fight (Compubox).
This is Alycia’s toughest fight because she’s being forced to change her fighting style. She must be technically and defensively sound. She is the smaller fighter in terms of weight and will find herself on the back foot, evading Elif’s offensive attack. She must be defensively disciplined for 30 minutes and avoid getting caught with a big shot.
Baumgardner won’t be able to stay in the pocket and exchange as she’s done in her previous matches. Her best method of victory for this match will be to outpoint the Golden Turkish Warrior by limiting exchanges, boxing at distance, and landing calculated and timed punches. Given her past defensive history, it may be too difficult to be so technical from one fight to the next. For Turhan, she must cut the ring effectively, utilize her jab, and try to be more precise with her punches.
She has knockout power that will give Baumgardner problems, and if she’s able to utilize calculated pressure, she can be more controlled and more difficult to telegraph. The shots will be there for her; she should just be more offensively strategic by dictating the exchanges. If she can be more tactical, she can create the openings needed to end it early.
