Former India batter Ambati Rayudu has endorsed Rohit Sharma‘s continued presence in India’s ODI setup ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup. Despite emerging talent, Rayudu emphasizes that Rohit’s leadership experience and match-winning temperament make him indispensable for the team’s ambitions.
With India set to host a three-match ODI series against England in July, discussions about Rohit’s long-term ODI future have intensified. However, Rayudu is confident the 37-year-old has already secured his position in the team’s planning cycle.
“Clarity is crucial for him, and I’m sure they’ve communicated their plans,” Rayudu told media. “His leadership value goes beyond batting—he maintains team morale in the dressing room, which is vital for large tournaments. I believe he’ll deliver in pressure situations, starting with the England series.”
The former Chennai Super Kings player highlighted the importance of experience in ICC tournaments, noting Rohit’s role in guiding younger players through challenging moments.
Regarding the ongoing debate between Rohit and rising star Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rayudu suggested there’s room for both in India’s evolving ODI strategy.
“Both deserve a place in the long-term plan. Rohit brings irreplaceable experience for high-stakes matches. Jaiswal has earned his opportunity and needs to be ready for World Cup conditions. He’ll get his chance when the team finds the right balance.”
Rohit has strengthened his case with consistent form in recent ODIs, scoring 143 runs at 47.66 against Afghanistan with a strike rate of 115.32. Jaiswal, meanwhile, announced his readiness with an unbeaten century (110 off 86 balls) in that series finale.
As India manages the transition between veterans and newcomers, Rayudu believes Rohit’s proven tournament record and leadership skills position him as a key figure in the country’s World Cup campaign.
