Commercial flights across the European Union reached 6.9 million in 2025, marking a 3.8% increase compared to the previous year, according to data released by Eurostat. The report highlights a steady recovery in air travel, with flight volumes returning to levels comparable to the pre-pandemic peak of seven million recorded in 2019.
The vast majority of these flights, 91.5%, were classified as scheduled commercial services—operations conducted according to published timetables and open to direct public booking. The remaining 8.5% comprised non-scheduled commercial flights, including charter services and special aviation requests.
Summer remained the peak season for non-scheduled aviation activity. June recorded 648,707 commercial flights (with 11.2% non-scheduled), followed by 690,855 flights in July (12.3% non-scheduled) and 693,046 flights in August (11.4% non-scheduled).
Amsterdam Schiphol Emerges as the EU’s Busiest Aviation Hub
Amsterdam Schiphol in the Netherlands led the ranking, handling 488,000 commercial departures and arrivals in 2025. Paris Charles de Gaulle followed in second place with 476,000 flights, while Frankfurt/Main in Germany secured third position with 457,000 flights.
Spain’s major gateways held strong positions, with Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas ranking fourth at 423,000 flights and Barcelona-El Prat placing fifth with 356,000 flights. The remainder of the top ten included Munich (329,000), Rome Fiumicino (320,000), Athens/Eleftherios Venizelos (271,000), Copenhagen/Kastrup (254,000), and Dublin (252,000).
Among the top ten hubs, Athens/Eleftherios Venizelos recorded the highest share of non-scheduled flights at 5.2%, followed closely by Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas at 4.8% and Copenhagen/Kastrup at 4.1%.
