Mirra Andreeva and Andrey Rublev delivered a stunning performance in the U.S. Open mixed doubles, upsetting defending champions Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori. Despite a challenging start, the duo maintained high confidence and excellent chemistry throughout the match.
In post-match comments, Andreeva highlighted their positive mindset, noting that they felt they played exceptionally well even in the first set, despite some unlucky moments. She expressed her gratitude for Rublev’s leadership, particularly during the crucial tiebreak.
“We both agreed that even in the first set, we played great. We were unlucky a couple of times. But, I don’t know, I just had so much fun playing with Andrey. I think we played great today. I’m so happy he took the initiative at the end of the tiebreak because I was super stressed, and he hit so many great shots! Thanks to him for leading the double today.”
Rublev, an Olympic gold medalist in mixed doubles, showered praise on his young partner, calling her performance unbelievable. He highlighted her composure at the net and her ability to deliver on key points.
“I am very lucky to have Mirra, because today she played unbelievable. She won all the most important points. She was amazing at the net. They were hitting her and she was defending, playing amazing winners. When you have a partner like this, it’s the easiest job you can do — at least don’t miss! And I was able to miss anyway. But no, we played really great and I’m happy to be part of this.”
The pair’s strong connection was further emphasized when Andreeva lightheartedly joked that Rublev was her “dream” mixed doubles partner, having had a crush on him in the past.
