Andy Burnham Mourns Father’s Passing, Thanks Leaders for Condolences

Prime Minister Andy Burnham has expressed his gratitude to party leaders for their support following the passing of his father, Roy, on Monday.

Opposition leaders sent their condolences after Burnham cancelled his scheduled engagements earlier in the week.

Burnham had previously noted that his father, who suffered from advanced Alzheimer’s, was unaware he had become prime minister.

Posting on social media, he thanked, external everyone who shared a kind message about his father, particularly the leaders of other political parties.

Burnham stated, “My family and I have been supported through this difficult time by the warmth and compassion of others. It means a great deal to us, and we wanted to express our gratitude.”

Speaking to journalists on his first day back at work on Wednesday, Burnham thanked those who had sent “so many lovely messages” to him and his family.

“It is difficult, and it will remain so for some time, but we must return to our duties,” he remarked.

“I also want to thank the leaders of the other parties. Their messages demonstrate that decency remains in British politics, and it is a comforting sight. I thank them from our entire family.”

He added that his father would want him to continue pursuing the changes he always encouraged him to make.

He recalled how his father, a former telephone engineer, had raised him with “laughter, love, and support” alongside his mother, Eileen, in Culcheth, Cheshire.

In July, Burnham discussed his father’s condition and stated that it had strengthened his determination to reform adult social care in England.
