Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has called for a reduction in the speed of artificial intelligence development, citing escalating concerns regarding the potential dangers posed by “superintelligent” systems.
The statement follows the recent departure of AI researcher Jacob Coxon. Coxon, who previously moved from OpenAI to Anthropic, has now left the industry entirely, claiming that leading U.S. AI firms are “gambling with our lives” in their pursuit of models capable of autonomous self-improvement.
Writing on his personal website, Amodei emphasized the need for strategic moderation. “We must slow the pace at which we improve the capabilities of AI models. Progress will still seem fast, and we must make wise use of the time we gain,” he stated, noting that the sheer power of the technology renders its associated risks severe.
Amodei, who co-founded Anthropic with his sister Daniela in 2021, argued for a balanced approach to innovation. He noted that while halting development would deprive humanity of critical benefits or cede control to authoritarian regimes, proceeding too quickly is reckless.
“But over the last few months, I have become convinced that fully addressing the risks requires even more prudence,” Amodei concluded.
