Meta’s newly launched consumer AI agent, Muse, is poised to shake up the subscription economy, and Wall Street now warns it could jeopardize a sizable portion of Apple’s services revenue. Analysts at Needham estimate that if just 20 % of the App Store’s business migrates to Muse’s zero‑fee “Connectors” platform, Apple could lose roughly $10 billion in annual revenue and $7.5 billion in EBITDA.
The projection is based on the assumption that about 40 % of Apple’s projected $123 billion in services revenue for fiscal year 2026 comes from the App Store. “Even a modest shift to a zero‑fee model would materially impact Apple’s growth rate and valuation multiple, as annuity streams command higher multiples than hardware,” wrote Laura Martin of Needham.
Meta’s rapid uptake of developers also raises concerns for Apple. The company reported receiving more than 1,500 developer applications within 168 hours of launching Muse Connectors, suggesting that developers could defect to Meta’s platform unless Apple improves its economic terms. “We believe AAPL will face developer defections unless it improves its economics for developers,” Martin noted.
Beyond revenue displacement, AI agents like Muse are expected to accelerate subscription churn by automatically auditing and recommending cancellations of under‑used services. “If consumers and small businesses adopt personal AI agents at scale, it could introduce incremental churn headwinds,” said Tal Liani of Bank of America. The trend aligns with broader consumer behavior: a recent CNET survey found that U.S. adults waste an average of $252 per year on forgotten subscriptions.
Overall, the analysis underscores a growing competitive threat to Apple’s app ecosystem, as Meta’s AI-driven tools could both siphon revenue and talent away from the App Store, prompting Apple to reconsider its developer pricing and fee structure.
