According to ESPN Argentina reporter Esteban Edul, key AFA executives anticipate Scaloni will finalize his extension. While his current contract extends to December 2026, the association aims to secure his long-term commitment as they prepare for the 2030 World Cup cycle.

AFA President Claudio Tapia intends to allow Scaloni time to reflect before resuming contract negotiations, which were nearing completion before and during the tournament. Critical terms—including financial compensation, the sporting framework, and the post-World Cup schedule—were already agreed upon prior to the final.

The primary unresolved issue involves Scaloni’s coaching staff. Trusted assistants Pablo Aimar and Roberto Ayala are poised to remain, while defensive set-piece specialist Walter Samuel’s future remains uncertain pending the extension.

Scaloni’s Future Remains Uncertain

Having assumed the role on an interim basis after the 2018 World Cup before securing a permanent appointment, Scaloni has guided Argentina through an eight-year period marked by significant achievements. However, following the 1-0 extra-time defeat to Spain in the final, the manager openly debated his future.

Speaking cautiously in the postfinal media session, Scaloni stated, “I will discuss my future with the president. I intend to fulfill my contract and then assess the situation. I need time to reflect, as I’m unsure whether such achievement can be replicated again.”
