Argentina’s football association has indicated it may have been the target of a cyber attack following the publication of critical emails regarding refereeing decisions in their 3-2 World Cup victory against Egypt.
The defending champions secured a dramatic late comeback after trailing Egypt 2-0, overcoming a potential early elimination to advance to the quarter-finals.
In response to the match outcome, Egypt’s football federation requested FIFA to disqualify French referee Francois Letexier and associated officials, citing allegations of biased refereeing favoring Argentina.
La Calle, an Argentine news outlet, claimed to have received emails from the Argentine Football Association (AFA) post-match accusing the result of “corrupt refereeing decisions” while praising Egypt’s performance.
The AFA confirmed receiving unrecognized emails from its institutional account, urging recipients to disregard suspicious messages containing links or personal data requests. They stated: “We are investigating potential unauthorized access to our account and will implement necessary security measures.”
