Mikel Arteta speaks to the media following Arsenal’s unexpected EFL Cup defeat.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta congratulated Fleetwood after the League Two side secured a memorable cup victory on penalties at Highbury.
Fleetwood overcame Arsenal in a remarkable EFL Cup encounter. The home team initially took the lead before the Gunners equalized, setting up a tense penalty shootout after 90 minutes. The visitors converted their spot-kicks effectively to defeat the English champions.
Arteta acknowledged the significance of the result while defending his team’s effort.

“Congratulations to Fleetwood. It’s a difficult day for us, but I cannot fault the attitude of the players,” Arteta told Sky Sports. “I haven’t seen anyone not giving their best at this level.”
“We created numerous chances and had plenty of possession, but ultimately this is football,” he added, reflecting on the match.
BBC Sport described the result as one of the biggest upsets in Carabao Cup history. Despite fielding a rotated squad, Arsenal struggled to break down Fleetwood’s resilient defense, with the League Two side earning a famous victory in the penalty shootout.
While the defeat represents a setback in Arsenal’s cup campaign, it provides an opportunity for the team to regroup and focus on their primary objectives this season.
