Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has revealed that Kai Havertz was deeply disappointed not to find the back of the net during the Champions League victory over Lille earlier in the week.

The Gunners are gearing up for their upcoming Premier League encounter against Nottingham Forest on Sunday afternoon, looking to extend a recent run of form that has seen them secure consecutive wins.

Following a disappointing 3-0 defeat to Brighton prior to the international break, Arsenal has bounced back with convincing victories over Leeds United (2-1) and Lille (3-0).

Although Havertz delivered a strong performance in the European fixture, Arteta noted that the forward remained frustrated by his inability to add a goal to his display.

Arteta on “competitive” Havertz

“He’s so competitive, Kai,” Arteta said in his press conference.

“He came in against Lille, he made a massive impact, you could see it straight away what he did on the pitch.

“He left the pitch and he was so upset that he didn’t score a goal.

“He was happy to help the team, but he was so upset. That’s the Kai that we want, the guy that wants to evolve and improve every single day.

“He loves the game, he loves to learn, he loves to feel important. He loves to feel that he can help other players as well.”

Arteta also emphasized how encouraging it has been to witness Havertz’s swift return to peak form following a prolonged injury layoff last season, recognizing the mental and physical resilience required for such a comeback.

It’s evident that the former Chelsea midfielder will play a pivotal role in Arsenal’s ambitions this campaign, reaffirming his value when operating at full fitness and confidence.
