Ashley Young has raised questions about whether Lisandro Martinez was genuinely injured during Leeds United’s match against Manchester United.

The defender was withdrawn at halftime and replaced by Noussair Mazraoui after reporting discomfort in his thigh.

Young has since cast doubt on the nature of that injury.

Speaking on the latest episode of The Overlap Daily, he said: “Obviously, all week everything was Lisandro Martinez. Instead of creating more of a hype around it by leaving him out – when it would be the talk before the game and then it would be the talk after the game – play him.

“He came off at half-time with an injury. Is he injured? If he’s injured, it’s understandable if he doesn’t play in the Como game. But I’m not sure.

“Going to Leeds away is a tough place, and after the week that he had, are you able to back that? Are you injured? Yeah, possibly. We’ll see.”

Martinez’s Future at Old Trafford Remains Uncertain

Michael Carrick has already ruled the Argentine out of tonight’s match against Como, adding that he remains doubtful for Saturday’s Premier League fixture at home to Bournemouth.

Martinez is in the final year of his contract at Old Trafford, with United holding an option to extend his stay by another 12 months.

Reports indicate the club may trigger that option only to sell him next summer and recover a transfer fee.

A recent incident in Madrid, combined with a poor injury record, has reportedly convinced INEOS that he would be better off leaving in 2027.

The 28-year-old was said to be interested in joining his close friend and compatriot Cristian Romero at Atletico Madrid before the 2026/27 season, making the Spanish club a likely destination when the transfer window reopens.
