A male adult and a minor have been arrested following an alleged assault against a volunteer from the One Nation party, with a baseball bat, in Torquay, Victoria.
Arrests were made last Sunday outside a residence in Torquay, located approximately 100 kilometers (62 miles) southwest of Melbourne, where an individual aged 37 and a youth aged 14 were taken into custody.
The 37-year-old suspect was charged with assault and remanded in custody, while the 14-year-old was issued a formal caution. Police noted that the victim sustained non-life-threatening injuries requiring hospitalization.
Warren Pickering, the leader of One Nation in Victoria, stated that the assault occurred after the suspects interfered with campaign signage on the volunteer’s property.
Mr Pickering characterized the alleged assault as ‘un-Australian and entirely unacceptable’.
‘Political violence or intimidation of any kind is completely unacceptable in this country,’ he declared.
Continuing, he added, ‘If you don’t like someone’s politics, you vote accordingly. You don’t assault them.’
Victorian Premier Ben Carroll condemned the attack as ‘shocking’.
He emphasized that ‘whether you’re wearing a red, a blue, an orange, or a green T-shirt, they are volunteers,’ underscoring the dedication of campaign workers regardless of their affiliation.
Additionally, he stressed, ‘They are out there doing what they believe is right, and no one should be subjected to attack.’
This incident unfolded during Victoria’s state election campaign, coinciding with a broader national reckoning over the tone of political discourse, following a separate attack on federal MP Helen Haines the previous month.
Law enforcement have not yet detailed a motive, though politicians, police forces, and political analysts have collectively warned that the heated nature of public debate is increasing the risk of political violence nationwide.
