In this edition of Europe Rendezvous, we examine how Italy’s democratic institutions are facing increasing scrutiny. While enjoying the season of la dolce vita, marginalized groups—including migrants, women seeking abortions, and journalists—have encountered significant challenges. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, leading a conservative and far-right coalition, is accused of expanding influence over the judiciary, media, and electoral systems as 2027 elections loom.
Part two features an interview with Antonio Tajani, Italy’s foreign minister and deputy prime minister, who discusses pressing geopolitical issues and tensions in Meloni’s relationship with U.S. President Donald Trump. We also speak with Ylenja Lucaselli, a parliamentarian from Meloni’s Brothers of Italy party, about Italy’s contentious abortion access. Despite legality, conscientious objection provisions by medical professionals have created unequal access, leaving some regions with minimal practical availability.
Sandro Gozi, a member of the European Parliament for Renew Europe, argues Meloni is steering Italy toward illiberalism. He cites civil rights restrictions, media pressure, and electoral reforms—including a majority bonus proposal—which passed the lower house but awaits Senate approval. This reform aims to reward winning coalitions with extra parliamentary seats.
Luke Brown reports on migration policy, a cornerstone of Meloni’s 2022 election success. Her government established a controversial migrant processing center in Albania. Economic needs have also driven policy, with approvals for 500,000 work visas through 2028. Recent clashes over migrants’ rights emerged after a Moroccan-born man’s death in Bologna police custody sparked protests.
