Aston Villa are reportedly preparing a new contract for Ian Maatsen after recent transfer interest from Manchester United.
United explored several left-back options during the summer but failed to secure any of them, leaving the position unresolved and likely to remain a priority in future transfer windows.
The Athletic reported that Newcastle’s Lewis Hall was among United’s leading targets, although the club moved too late to complete a deal for the defender.

Maatsen has established himself as a key Villa player and would have added quality to Manchester United’s back line. His potential long-term future at the club is therefore disappointing news for the Red Devils.
Football Insider report that Maatsen’s current contract runs until 2030, reducing Villa’s pressure to sell. The Birmingham club appears determined to secure his future and discourage interest from United or any other contender.
Where could Manchester United turn at left-back?
Maatsen may not have been United’s leading target, despite being considered late in the summer window.
The Dutchman is generally viewed as a step below Hall, making the Newcastle defender a more likely option for the club to pursue.
United have also been linked with Barcelona left-back Alejandro Balde, whom Fabrizio Romano reported exclusively to CaughtOffside was considering. However, the Spain international currently appears content to remain at the Nou Camp.
