After years of relative quiet, Bradford Cox’s return to the live stage was already a cause for celebration. When Atlas Sound, his long-dormant solo project, was slated to perform at Philadelphia’s Making Time ∞ festival, it marked the Deerhunter frontman’s first official live performance since 2019. However, what few anticipated was that Cox would debut an entire album’s worth of brand-new material. His eight-song set, which we had the privilege of experiencing firsthand, was sparsely yet masterfully arranged—featuring just a set of brass bells, a bass guitar, and Cox’s trusted SP-404 sampler—yet utterly transfixing.
Now, fans can finally hear one of those new tracks in its polished studio form. Titled “Octoberland,” the song arrives alongside a haunting, self-directed music video by Cox. Check it out below.
The moniker Atlas Sound originates from a cassette karaoke machine that a middle-school-aged Cox used to craft his earliest home recordings. Between 2008 and 2011, he released three full-length albums under the project—Let the Blind Lead Those Who Can See But Cannot Feel, Logos, and Parallax—alongside the demo compilation Bedroom Databank, Vols. 1-4. These records offered a distinct alternative to Deerhunter’s shoegaze and krautrock influences, leaning heavily into sampling and lush, wall-of-sound pop aesthetics.
For those who missed Atlas Sound’s performance at Making Time, there is still an opportunity to see him live. Cox has three additional festival appearances scheduled for 2027, including stops at Big Ears, Kilby Block Party, and Primavera Sound.
