Australian BTS Fans Condemn Ticketmaster’s Hidden Pricing Strategy for 2027 Tour Dates]
Australian fans of the K-pop group BTS are raising alarms over Ticketmaster’s decision to conceal ticket pricing for the artist’s upcoming 2027 concerts, labeling the approach as “predatory” and urging consumers to file complaints with the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC).
Ticketmaster Australia revealed concerts at Melbourne’s Marvel Stadium and Sydney’s Accor Stadium in February 2027 as part of the band’s comeback tour following a four-year hiatus. However, the company has not disclosed ticket prices ahead of the presale and general sale scheduled for next week.
“Ticket prices will be made available once the Waiting Room opens and will not change during the Army membership presale or general onsale,” Ticketmaster states on its website. BTS fans, known as the Army, must also pay to become official members through the Weverse app to access presale tickets.
The pricing strategy has drawn criticism from fans and the Consumer Policy Research Centre (CPRC), which described it as “manipulative” and “deeply unfair.” The CPRC’s CEO, Erin Turner, told The Guardian that the lack of price transparency creates a high-pressure environment where fans cannot make informed financial decisions.
“I’m worried that they’ll be charging different fans different prices,” Turner said. “By not letting anyone know prices or even price ranges beforehand, fans really face the prospect of being manipulated and tricked into spending more than they necessarily need to.”
Fans have taken to social media to criticize the practice, with many noting that other countries have released pricing information prior to ticket sales. A fan group called BTS Australia criticized the company for not providing basic pricing information, arguing that consumers deserve transparency during Australia’s current cost-of-living crisis.
The ACCC confirmed it does not typically comment on individual complaints but noted that under Australian Consumer Law, businesses must display clear and accurate prices. While companies aren’t required to state prices in advance, they cannot mislead consumers about costs.
A new government bill aims to strengthen unfair trading practices, targeting what officials call “dark patterns” – manipulative online tactics that create artificial urgency. The legislation, set to take effect on July 1 next year, addresses the exact concerns raised about Ticketmaster’s approach.
Guardian Australia has sought comment from relevant parties including the government, Ticketmaster, and Live Nation.
