Penny Wong and Wang Yi meet in Manila

Foreign Affairs Minister Penny Wong met with her Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi, on the sidelines of the ASEAN foreign ministers’ meeting in Manila last night, according to a statement from her department.

This marked their twelfth meeting, during which the ministers examined ASEAN priorities and underscored the significance of peace and stability throughout the Indo-Pacific region.

Wong voiced Australia’s concerns regarding China’s recent test of a nuclear-capable submarine-launched missile earlier this month, highlighting the deep apprehension voiced by numerous Pacific island nations.

She also raised several consular matters, including the case of Dr Yang Jun, reaffirming respect for Australia’s laws, sovereignty, freedom of expression, and the need for safe, professional maritime conduct, while emphasizing human rights.
