Hong Kong Labour Minister Justifies Wage Rise Amid Sector Growth

Hong Kong’s robust economic performance over the past year is the rationale for increasing the monthly minimum wage for foreign domestic helpers, according to the labour minister, while noting disappointment from both trade unions and employer‑group representatives.

Defending the government’s determination to raise the figure by 2.35 percentage points—to reach HK$5,220 (approximately US$665)—Secretary for Labour and Welfare Chris Sun Yuk‑Han emphasized that the measure aligns with a policy goal of maintaining a “balanced and acceptable” adjustment trajectory.

During a radio interview on Saturday, Sun remarked, “When reviewing the history, the average annual increase has generally hovered between two and two‑and‑a‑half per cent for several years.”
