Balochistan Police Chief and Customs Head Pledge Security Boost for Traders

QUETTA: Balochistan Inspector General of Police Mohammad Tahir and Chief Collector Customs Masood Ahmed warned that no obstacle would be tolerated in legitimate business and trade within the province, emphasizing that all necessary measures would be taken to safeguard the business community and transporters.

They delivered this assurance during a meeting with the business community, transporters and other stakeholders at the Quetta Chamber of Commerce and Industry on Saturday. Members of the business alliance and action committee were also present.

IGP Tahir noted that the province is confronting a “hybrid war” and urged all stakeholders to collaborate in addressing the challenges. He reported that law‑enforcement agencies have conducted more than 2,000 intelligence‑based operations this year, during which 47 security personnel were martyred and 164 militants were neutralized.

“Security measures, although at times demanding, are essential for the protection of life and property, particularly in light of recent incidents in Quetta,” he added.

Business representatives told the meeting that thousands of import and export vehicles remain stranded in border areas such as Taftan, Noshki and Quetta, calling for enhanced security to facilitate trade.

The traders also raised concerns about traffic congestion, aerial firing and customs‑related issues.

The IGP said efforts are underway to strengthen the Eagle Force and curb aerial firing through new standard operating procedures. He also said the issue of harassment faced by Balochistan’s transporters and traders in other provinces would be taken up with the Ministry of Interior.

Speaking on the occasion, Chief Collector Customs Masood Ahmed announced that the Baleli checkpost has been abolished and private labourers deployed at customs checkpoints removed following complaints.

He added that vehicle confiscations in smuggling cases are being carried out under existing law, noting that legislative changes would be required to amend the process.
