The United States men’s national team have advanced to the round of 16, where they will meet Belgium in Seattle on July 6 at 20:00 ET, following a 2–0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina that marked the U.S.’s first knockout‑stage win at the World Cup in 24 years. During that match, striker Folarin Balogun received a red card for a reckless challenge in the 64th minute, stepping on the ankle of Bosnian defender Tarik Muharemović.
After the game, manager Mauricio Pochettino clarified his stance, stating that in his opinion the incident did not merit a red card. He referenced a comparable situation involving Lionel Messi, who also escaped dismissal despite a similar challenge.
\”In my view,\” Pochettino said, \”both incidents were not red cards. It was not intentional; I can speak only for Balogun. For me, a red card should be reserved for actions meant to harm the opponent. When a player lands on an opponent, the intention is not to cause injury… For me, it was never a red card.\”
From a technical standpoint, intent is not the sole factor in judging dangerous play, but Pochettino argued that Balogun’s reaction underscores the nature of the incident. He added that Balogun is disappointed by the card, yet relieved that the team progressed to the round of 16, even though the suspension will complicate preparations for the upcoming match.
How long is Balogun suspended for?
Because the dismissal was a straight red card, Balogun will serve a one‑game suspension. While FIFA may, in principle, extend a sanction for violent conduct to three matches, there is no indication that such a measure will be applied in this case.
Can the red card be appealed?
Players may appeal a dismissal, but an appeal can only succeed if the sanction exceeds one match; otherwise the ban remains. According to a FIFA spokesperson and U.S. Soccer, any extension of the suspension would require a decision from the FIFA Disciplinary Committee.
Who can replace Balogun?
The United States forward is the tournament’s leading scorer with three goals to date. He opened the scoring against Bosnia and Herzegovina and will be a significant loss against Belgium, yet manager Pochettino still has options. Ricardo Pepi, who started two group‑stage matches, is the most direct positional replacement. Christian Pulisic has experience as a false nine under Pochettino, while Malik Tillman could shift to the wing if Pulisic is unavailable. Haji Wright, who has yet to feature prominently in the tournament, would be an unlikely candidate for a starting role in a knockout match.
