Meta has settled a major lawsuit concerning the online safety of young users, avoiding a costly trial that could have resulted in hundreds of billions of dollars in penalties. The settlement, reached with a coalition of 29 state attorneys general, includes stringent new protections for teenagers.

Under the agreement, Meta must implement an age assurance standard subject to independent verification. The system must maintain a false positive rate of no more than 10% for users aged 16 to 17, and 3% for those aged 13 to 15. Additionally, the company will introduce tools allowing teens to disable personalized feeds, opting out of algorithm-driven content recommendations. Push notifications will be suspended for teenage users between 10:00 PM and 7:00 AM by default, unless parents override these limits. Daily usage of Meta’s applications will also be capped at two hours per day, with exceptions for direct messaging and long-form content.
