Bay City Roller Surges Past Lambourn to Claim Coronation Cup Crown]
Bay City Roller delivered a stunning upset in the Group One Coolmore Coronation Cup at Epsom, defeating top-line contenders in a thrilling finish on heavy ground.
The six-runner field featured notable talent, including world’s highest-rated turf horse Calandagan and last year’s narrow winner Jan Brueghel, alongside Lambourn, the dual Derby winner trained by the same yard as the eventual victor.
Illinois set an early pace for Ballydoyle, with Lambourn tracking in third under Wayne Lordan. Oisin Murphy’s Bay City Roller (17/2) stayed in the center of the track approaching the final furlong.
Bay City Roller’s tactical switch to the middle proved decisive, as the colt accelerated decisively on the soft ground to win by 10 lengths. Jan Brueghel, never in contention earlier, rallied late to claim second ahead of Lambourn and a disappointing Calandagan.
Sparks Fly led them home in the Princess Margaret Stakes.
Pearson’s Brilliant Ride Guides Sparks Fly to Princess Elizabeth Stakes Victory
Laura Pearson delivered a masterful performance aboard Sparks Fly, securing the six-year-old’s victory in the Group Two Princess Elizabeth Stakes. The 7/2 shot easily accounted for a quality field on soft ground.
Sparks Fly established her pace and Pearson made a bold decision to stay on the far rail while competitors drifted inward. The strategic choice proved telling as the filly galloped firmly throughout to win by 8½ lengths over Love Dynasty.
“I think I looked round twice to double check!” Pearson exclaimed. “She’s such a trooper – she doesn’t need horses around her to gallop like that. I was never doubting her. She loves her own company and enjoyed today’s conditions.”

Ten Bob Tony Nabs Witness Stand in Driving Rain at Epsom
Ten Bob Tony produced a late surge to edge out Witness Stand in the opening Betfred Tattenham Corner Stakes, overcoming challenging conditions and a field of eight runners.
Witness Stand led early after wind surgery and a tongue-tie application but was overtaken in the final strides by Kieran Shoemark’s patient ride aboard the 11/2 shot Ten Bob Tony. Never So Brave and Alcantor, the market favorites, failed to threaten.
Trainer Ed Walker praised the performance: “He needs these conditions – that was mega. It was very easy watching and Kieran gave him a peach. He won this race last year (when run at Haydock as the John of Gaunt) and we’ll target the Foret next, preferably on soft ground.”
