Putnam Avenue in the Bed-Stuy neighborhood of Brooklyn now bears the name of a foundational figure in hip-hop. During a formal ceremony attended by loved ones, relatives, and municipal leaders, the thoroughfare was designated ODB Jones Way in honor of Wu-Tang Clan co-founder Ol’ Dirty Bastard.
Born Russell Tyrone Jones in Brooklyn’s Fort Greene, the rap icon’s legacy was celebrated by his brother Ramsey Jones, who appeared in a video by NYC photographer Howard Weiss. Jones explained that the commemorative sign was installed at the intersection of Franklin Avenue and Putnam Avenue, the same block where the family’s grandmother resides. This block also features a mural depicting the cover of ODB’s seminal debut album, Return To The 36 Chambers: The Dirty Version.
