BEIJING: A small plane crashed into a high-rise building in Beijing on Friday afternoon, killing the pilot and injuring 13 people, according to Chinese authorities. The incident occurred at approximately 5:55 p.m. in the Chaoyang district, a major business area. The two-seat light sport aircraft struck the CITIC Tower, also known as China Zun, one of Beijing’s most iconic skyscrapers.
The 108-story CITIC Tower, recognizable for its ancient Chinese wine vessel design and standing over 1,700 feet tall, is located in a cluster of skyscrapers near a major ring road. The aircraft collision caused significant casualties, though the pilot was confirmed deceased.
Authorities have not yet identified the pilot or the specific building involved in the initial reports. While the cause of the crash remains undetermined, the incident occurred in a city known for strict airspace controls, including recent drone restrictions. An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash is currently underway.
