Belgium Secures Group G Top Spot with Dominant Win Over New Zealand, Sets Stage for Potential USMNT Showdown]
Belgium claimed top position in Group G with a commanding 5-1 victory over New Zealand at the World Cup on Friday, surpassing Egypt after the latter settled for a 1-1 draw with Iran in a simultaneous kickoff.
Leandro Trossard delivered a brace while Kevin de Bruyne extended the lead before the 66th minute, securing Belgium’s first win of the tournament following earlier draws against Egypt and Iran. Elijah Just scored a consolation goal for New Zealand in the 84th minute, but additional strikes from Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Saelemaekers ensured a comfortable margin. Belgium outshot their opponents 35 to six and accumulated 3.65 expected goals compared to New Zealand’s 0.25.
Belgium’s superior goal differential proved decisive in overtaking Egypt, who entered the match in first place with four points to Belgium’s two. Egypt earned a point from their draw with Iran, though Iran demonstrated strong attacking play with 1.83 expected goals versus Egypt’s 0.81. Mohamed Salah, Egypt’s all-time leading World Cup scorer, managed only one shot on target as Iran’s defense effectively limited their attacking options.
Both Belgium and Egypt advance to the knockout stage as group winner and runner-up respectively, while Iran awaits the final group results to determine their fate. Belgium are positioned to meet South Korea, the third-place team from Group A, on Wednesday at Seattle’s Lumen Field, while Egypt will face Group D runners-up Australia on July 3 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
The victory positions Belgium for a potential Round of 16 clash with the U.S. men’s national team, contingent on both sides advancing from their Round of 32 fixtures. The USMNT are scheduled to face Bosnia and Herzegovina on Wednesday at Levi’s Stadium. A meeting between the teams would mark a rematch of March’s friendly, where the US led 1-1 at halftime before collapsing in a 5-2 defeat as Belgium scored three goals within 15 minutes. Notably, only six players who started that match have since started a World Cup game for the USMNT, suggesting significant roster turnover if both teams progress.
This would represent the first World Cup meeting between the nations since the 2014 Round of 16, where Belgium triumphed 2-1 after extra time in Salvador, Brazil. That match featured Tim Howard’s record 16 saves and saw goals from Kevin de Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku, with Julian Green adding a late winner. The teams previously faced each other in the 1930 World Cup, with the US prevailing 3-0 in the inaugural tournament edition.
