Belgrade police have fatally shot a knife-wielding attacker who assaulted a guard outside the Israeli Embassy early Wednesday, prompting authorities to elevate the terror alert to its highest level.
Interior Minister Ivica Dacic called the episode a suspected terrorist assault and confirmed that security has been tightened at key locations across the country.
Dacic said a teenage assailant, whose identity remains unknown, shouted “Allahu Akbar” before lunging at a gendarmerie officer with two knives. The officer sustained minor injuries but responded by firing in self‑defence, killing the attacker.
Serbian security agencies had been monitoring the suspect, whom the minister identified as an Islamic State supporter. Dacic noted that the individual had displayed a black Islamic State flag on his Instagram account.
The incident follows a series of recent political developments in Serbia, including early parliamentary elections last weekend that saw a youth‑led movement defeat former president Aleksandar Vučić’s long‑standing bloc amid ongoing anti‑government protests. Vučić and his allies retain control of the police apparatus as a new government is still being formed.
It also comes shortly after Israel’s own parliamentary election on Tuesday.
