Ben Affleck has maintained a prolific pace in 2026, reuniting with longtime collaborator Matt Damon for the Netflix crime thriller The Rip before stepping behind the camera to direct and star in the kidnapping drama Animals alongside Kerry Washington and Steven Yeun. The actor-producer is also slated to reprise his role as Christian Wolff in a third Accountant installment with Jon Bernthal, though production timelines remain unconfirmed.
Even for a career spanning four decades, misfires are inevitable. Among Affleck’s most notable commercial disappointments is Hypnotic, a $70 million sci-fi thriller co-starring Alice Braga that grossed just $16 million globally upon its 2023 release. Three years after its theatrical run, however, the film has quietly mounted a comeback. Hypnotic recently secured a streaming home on Hulu in the United States and has lingered in the VOD top 10 on platforms including Prime Video and Apple TV for over a month.
What Is ‘Hypnotic’ About?
Directed by Robert Rodriguez from a script he co-wrote with Max Borenstein, Hypnotic stars Affleck as Austin detective Danny Rourke, a man desperate to find his missing daughter. His investigation pulls him into a labyrinth of reality-bending crimes alongside Diana Cruz (Braga), a gifted psychic. The ensemble includes Dayo Okeniyi, who also appears in Apple TV+’s Dark Matter. Despite a tepid 32% critical score on Rotten Tomatoes, audiences were more receptive, awarding the film a 62% rating.
“Determined to find his missing daughter, Austin detective Danny Rourke finds himself spiraling down a rabbit hole investigating a series of reality-bending crimes where he will ultimately call into question his most basic assumptions about everything and everyone in his world. Aided by Diana Cruz, a gifted psychic, Rourke simultaneously pursues and is pursued by a lethal specter — the one man he believes holds the key to finding the missing girl — only to discover more than he ever bargained for.”
Hypnotic is available now on Hulu.
