McDavid’s points and assists streaks continue to impress teammates.
The Oilers have gotten off to a strong start on the road.
McDavid looks to extend his season-opening points and assist streaks to 15 games, while the Oilers aim for a seventh consecutive road victory when they face the Rangers on Sunday night.
McDavid currently holds 37 points, 11 more than teammate Leon Draisaitl, who has found the net nine times over his last nine outings.
McDavid has tallied eight goals and 29 assists on the season, including a helper on Ryan Nugent-Hopkins’ power-play goal late in the second period of Saturday’s 4-0 victory over the New York Islanders, where Tristan Jarry faced just 18 shots.
“He just finds ways, and even if things aren’t going his way or the team’s way, he’ll find a way to kind of get us some momentum, and usually that ends up in a goal for us,” Nugent-Hopkins said about McDavid after scoring twice Saturday. “It’s been a lot of fun to watch, and I know he’s not going to slow down.”
McDavid’s current streak is three games shy of his season-opening record; he opened 2021-22 with a point in 17 consecutive games.
A Art Ross and Ted Lindsay Trophy winner last season, McDavid enters Sunday seeking an eighth points streak of at least 15 games, having previously recorded a career-high 20-game streak from Dec. 4, 2025, to Jan. 13, 2026.
McDavid has contributed five goals and 14 points in Edmonton’s six road outings, with the Oilers outscoring opponents 31-13 on the road and chasing the franchise’s best road start since the 1983-84 campaign.
“I feel like every time he touches the puck, whether it’s behind our net or behind their net, in my head I feel we’re going to score because when the puck’s in him and (Draisaitl’s) and those guys’ hands, good things happen,” Edmonton defenseman Ryan Shea said.
The Rangers are looking to halt a three-game losing streak that has seen them surrender 18 goals, having allowed 28 during a 1-4-1 slump since a 4-1 win over Tampa Bay on Oct. 13.
New York takes the ice for the first time since its six-game home winning streak ended with a 6-3 loss to Los Angeles on Monday.
The Rangers held practice over the weekend, adjusting their forward lines.
Pavel Dorofeyev was shifted to the top line alongside Mika Zibanejad and Alexis Lafreniere, where he has three goals in his first 14 games with New York, replacing Gabe Perreault.
“We’re trying to find a way to capture Pav’s best game,” New York coach Mike Sullivan told reporters at a recent practice. “And so we’re moving people around based on a number of different objectives. No. 1, trying to help Pav capture his best game, create some balance through our lineup. I don’t think Mika’s line has been as effective most recently as it was earlier in the year. I was reluctant to move people earlier in the year because we thought that line was playing extremely well.
New York may also tweak its defense, as Sean Durzi (undisclosed injury) and Braden Schneider (illness) missed Saturday’s practice and are possible game-day scratches.
Edmonton holds a 10-2-2 record in the last 14 matchups against the Rangers, including a 6-1-0 mark in New York.
