Manchester United have pursued Jean-Philippe Mateta, a promising Premier League striker, as a cornerstone for their attack ahead of the January transfer window. The 29-year-old has become a key target for Old Trafford following Benjamin Šeško’s injury setbacks.

Mateta’s seasoned Premier League record and favorable contract position him as one of the most realistic options for a mid-season arrival. His ability to adapt quickly makes him an attractive alternative to younger alternatives.

Mateta is pushing towards January exit

According to reports, Mateta is poised to leave Crystal Palace in January, with his representatives actively seeking a new club. While Nottingham Forest and Everton are also monitoring the situation, United remain firmly committed to the potential acquisition.

United’s interest is well established. Jason Wilcox highlighted Mateta’s Premier League pedigree and scoring record as highly valuable, and the striker is reportedly open to a move to Old Trafford.

Over the last three Premier League seasons, Mateta has consistently scored double figures, reducing the risk of adaptation compared to some of his younger substitutes.

CaughtOffside reported recently that Mateta is one of four forwards on United’s shortlist alongside Nicolò Tresoldi, Igor Matanovic and Dion Beljo.

For Man United, Mateta makes a lot of sense. Šeško remains the long-term No.9, so spending another enormous fee on a young striker could create an unnecessary problem once he returns. Mateta offers something different. He is physically strong, understands Premier League defending and could immediately lead the line without requiring months to settle. His contract situation should also make him considerably cheaper than Tresoldi, who is valued at around £42million.

The downside is age. At 29, Mateta would not offer much resale value.

But January is about solving immediate problems, and United desperately need reliable goals and depth.

If Palace are genuinely prepared to sell and Mateta remains keen on Old Trafford, this could be one of the most practical deals available to United.
