Berlin Pride Parade Incident: Vehicle Rams Crowd, Fatalities and Injuries Reported

What happened?

On Saturday evening, at approximately 10 p.m., a white van entered a crowd about 100 meters from a Christopher Street Day celebration near Brandenburg Gate in central Berlin. According to police spokesperson Florian Nath, the vehicle traveled parallel to a main road, striking several people before colliding with a tree. The driver then abandoned the van and escaped on foot, Nath added.

Authorities later confirmed that the vehicle was privately owned, not a rental, and that it had been removed from the scene on Sunday.

Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt (CDU) later indicated that a suspect is thought to have assaulted victims with a blade, possibly a machete, before fleeing the scene.

Following the incident, the area surrounding the crime scene was placed under lockdown on Saturday night after organizers called off the remainder of the event and evacuated attendees. Police conducted overnight searches of the Tiergarten district using infrared equipment, Nath reported.

Who was injured, who was killed?

One woman succumbed to her injuries, and 29 individuals were wounded, several of them seriously.

\”This is an assault on our society,\” German Chancellor Friedrich Merz wrote on social media in response to the attack, which he described as \”heinous.\” The victims were near the closing party of the Christopher Street Day parade, an event that celebrates LGBTQ+ rights.

By Sunday afternoon, police confirmed that none of the injured were in life‑threatening condition.

Who is the suspect?

Initial eyewitness reports suggested the involvement of multiple assailants, prompting police to search for additional suspects.

Interior Minister Dobrindt stated on Sunday that the primary suspect is Abdul B., 21, who had previously attracted the attention of authorities due to a high number of prior incidents and alleged radicalization. In line with German press regulations, Deutsche Welle does not publish the full name of criminal suspects.

Prosecutors allege that Abdul B. disseminated Islamic State propaganda online and had recently attempted, unsuccessfully, to travel to Syria to join the group.

He later distanced himself from the group. Abdul B. was born in Germany and holds German citizenship; his mother is of Lebanese origin.

On Sunday evening, Berlin’s Senate Department for Interior Affairs announced that the fugitive suspect Abdul B. had been shot dead during a police operation in a garden allotment in Spandau, Berlin’s westernmost borough. The interior minister subsequently indicated that there was no longer any threat to the public.

What was the motive?

The exact motive remains undetermined; however, based on the suspect’s background, authorities are treating the incident as an act of terror.

\”Everything points to this being an Islamist terrorist act,\” Dobrindt stated on Sunday.

Consequently, the Federal Public Prosecutor General will assume responsibility for the investigation, Justice Minister Stefanie Hubig confirmed.

This office typically handles investigations into serious offenses that impact Germany’s internal or external security, including terrorism, treason, or espionage.

Where do we go from here?

Hundreds of mourners gathered at Brandenburg Gate on Sunday, even as the manhunt continued, to honor the victims and express anger and shock over what is perceived as an attack on the LGBTQ+ community.

\”Yesterday was an assault on all of us,\” one speaker said, \”targeting our identities, our existence, our community, and our democracy. Yet we will not allow it to defeat us.\”

German President Frank‑Walter Steinmeier remarked, \”this is an attack on our open society, our way of life, and our capacity to coexist.\”

Several key state elections are scheduled for later this year, with the far‑right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party polling strongly.

The Saturday vehicle ramming bears resemblance to other deadly attacks in recent years, raising concerns about police preparedness for large gatherings and responses to known offenders.
