While introducing the new smaller-format 3v3 tournament has been met with some criticism, particularly regarding the absence of goalkeepers, the impact on player development remains a topic of debate.
The 3v3 format operates for a twelve-month period before transitioning back to a five-a-side format, effectively allowing goalkeepers to continue returning from under-8 development levels as the season progresses.
“When you make decisions like this, there are obvious trade-offs, but we do not believe it will be detrimental to the development of future goalkeepers,” Folwell explained.
“Players obviously cannot use their hands in 3v3, but they are still developing crucial defensive skills such as blocking, sliding, and positioning themselves between the ball and the goal,” Folwell noted.
“They will also improve their dribbling ability, which is increasingly vital for goalkeepers today,” Folwell added.
The organization does not view goalkeeping as an early specialization position, pointing to examples like England goalkeeper Hannah Hampton, who initially played outfield for a significant stretch of her career.
Ultimately, the long-term impact of the new format on the development of English footballers may take several years to become apparent.
However, England is not the only nation exploring this approach; many other countries, including Germany, the Netherlands, and Norway, have already integrated 3v3 into their youth structures.
Globally, this method has seen increasing popularity and acceptance.
“This marks the initial year of implementation, and naturally, it requires time to roll out and for people to embrace the change,” Folwell stated.
“Nevertheless, what we have observed is that once individuals try it, they often become converts; they understand the rationale behind the initiative because the children genuinely love playing the game.”
