[MNF Anthem Controversy Over Grammy Winner’s Live Performance]

Pat Monahan of Train made an appearance at the Monday Night Football game between the San Francisco 49ers and the Washington Commanders this week.

The 49ers entered the matchup unscathed, and their victory – a 23‑17 triumph over the Washington Commanders – was a well‑earned result after a strong start to the season.

While the team’s early momentum was impressive, much of the online conversation centered on Monahan delivering the national anthem together with his son ahead of kickoff.

Fans Hit Out After Train’s Pat Monahan and His Son Perform the National Anthem at 49ers vs Commanders Game

San Francisco–based band Train has amassed numerous accolades across their career, earning Grammys for “Best Rock Song,” “Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocalist(s),” and “Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals.”

Nevertheless, several spectators expressed stark dissatisfaction with Monahan and his son’s rendition of the anthem during the 49ers‑Commanders contest.

One fan quipped: “What in the world was that? Easily the worst national anthem ever!”

Another responded: “Maybe THE worst national anthem I’ve ever heard. Good grief. Who booked this? You’re FIRED!”

A third noted: “As someone who grew up with Carl Lewis and Roseanne… that might have been the worst rendition of the National Anthem I’ve ever heard.”

“Anyone else watching MNF was that the worst national anthem rendition you’ve ever seen?” asked a fourth viewer.

A fifth added: “That was probably the worst rendition of the national anthem I’ve ever heard. Yikes.”

Promotional material was stripped from the post.

Another commenter described it as “a historically bad performance,” sharing a clip of the incident online.

Despite the backlash, 49ers supporters remained complacent, as the team finished the night 6‑0 following a solid showing.
