Queensland coach Billy Slater has brought Reece Walsh back into the Maroons squad for the critical second game of the State of Origin series in Melbourne, though his specific role remains undecided.
After being overlooked for the series opener in Sydney, the Brisbane Broncos star returns as Queensland’s 18th man. Slater indicated that Walsh’s deployment—whether as a utility off the extended bench or in a specific position—will be determined during the team’s 10-day preparation camp.
“We believe having him on the bench is the best move for the team,” Slater explained. “We are well aware of Reece’s capabilities. I maintain a strong relationship with him; he has developed a great game and will deliver if called upon.”
Slater hinted that Walsh could potentially cover the halves from the bench, confirming, “In short, yes. We have options there. Reece is part of the squad and will not be released to play for the Broncos this weekend.”
The recall comes despite a challenging period for Walsh at the club level, where the Broncos have suffered five consecutive losses, including recent defeats to the Dragons and Titans. While Slater acknowledged Walsh’s current dip in form, he declined to elaborate on the specifics of the selection, stating the reasoning would remain internal.
Walsh is joined in the camp by Kulikefu Finefeuiaki, Murray Taulagi, and Heilum Luki as the Maroons aim to keep the series alive at the MCG following their narrow loss in Sydney.
“Whether Murray is needed in the first minute or the 60th, I don’t believe he’ll be overawed,” Slater said. “He and Reece both understand the requirements of being a Queenslander.”
Slater emphasized the mental fortitude required for bench roles, noting, “These positions are demanding. While they are starters for their respective clubs, their roles in this team are different. You never know if or when you will enter the game, so the right headspace is essential.”
Dolphins standout Kulikefu Finefeuiaki also earns a call-up, joining four club teammates: Thomas Flegler, Max Plath, Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow, and Selwyn Cobbo.
“He has been exceptional all season,” Slater noted. “His standard of football has reached the level required for the Maroons. He carries the ball with power and consistency, and I’ve been particularly impressed with his defensive growth.”
The New South Wales Blues are expected to announce their squad later on Monday.
