Billy Strings, a virtuoso bluegrass musician and prominent figure in the jam‑infused Americana scene, is also a passionate metal enthusiast. Last year he delivered a scorching solo on a re‑imagined medley of tech‑death classics by Cryptopsy. Now, as he prepares for his hometown’s Ionia Freak Fair festival in Ionia, Michigan, he has booked an entire dedicated metal stage.
The two‑day Ionia Freak Fest will take place August 28‑29 at the Ionia Fairgrounds. Strings will headline both nights, sharing the main stage with fellow Americana acts such as Greesky Bluegrass and Leftover Salmon. In addition to the primary stage, a Metal & Pinball Tent will feature its own lineup, booked with serious metal talent: Cryptopsy will headline one night, while Boston hardcore legends Bane will perform the other. Supporting acts include For The Fallen Dreams, Flesh & Blood Robot, Heartsick, and See You Next Tuesday.
In an Instagram post, Strings wrote, “These are bands that I have loved for years and some of them are dear friends of mine that I used to play shows with 20 years ago.”
